In this short story, Goodman Brown and Faith lived happily as a couple, being close toGod in everything they do, and though Goodman Brown says that his journey is a duty he mustcomplete, the truth lying behind it is never directly stated. In these specific two passages, YoungGoodman Brown sets out on his evil, spiritual quest leaving his wife, Faith, at home,involuntarily thinking horrid thoughts. He insists that his promise to be a better person after thisdeed will justify his religious wrongdoing. The irony comes when he tells his wife that prayingand and going immediately to bed will protect her from harm, the same night that YoungGoodman Brown is headed into a blind search for an evil presence. On his quest, YoungGoodman Brown is successively shown that his once godly companions in his family andcommunity, are actually worshipers of the devil. Sequently, these passages illustrate how YoungGoodman Brown shamefully, yet easily, succumbs to evil, leaving behind his desire to achievehigh moral and religious reputation, while involuntarily gaining the perspective that each andevery human has an interior evil.
The first passage begins to illustrates how despite Young Goodman Brown’s strongdesire to have high moral and religious reputation, he finds himself at the devil’s ceremony,where he realizes even his wife has an interior evil. Young Goodman Brown cries that his abilityto see the good in people has vanished, and it is to the devil “this world given”.
