: MR, a 23-year-old Native American male comes in to see you
because he has been having anxiety and wants something to help him. He has been
smoking "pot" and says he drinks to help him too. He tells you he is afraid that he will
not get into Heaven if he continues in this lifestyle. He is not taking any prescriptions
medications and denies drug use. He has a positive family history of diabetes,
hypertension, and alcoholism.
Socioeconomic
The World Health Organization (2017) defines social determinants of health as
the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. These circumstances
are influenced by the availability, or the lack thereof, of money and other necessary
resources. The Indian Health Service Program which was created in the 1950s to
provide culturally appropriate healthcare to American Indian communities, remains to
this day, underfunded. This insufficient funding is responsible for delays and deficiencies
in preventative services, along with primary and specialty treatment (Espey et al., 2014).
