ANT 345C October 4 Writing Assignment: Week 5 The four readings this week focused two different aspects of postmodern urbanism; the first two focus on social implications concerning the poor in urban cities while the last two concentrate on the development of Los Angeles into a postmodern urban epicenter. Looking for the REAL ‘Nigga’ by Robin Kelley and How Urban Ethnography Counters Myths about the Poor by Judith Goode both focus on how Social Scientists’ studies of the poor in urban cities has directly shaped popular discourse regarding the lifestyle and circumstances of black culture and the “underclass” as a whole. Kelley’s piece identifies how anthropologists’ definition of culture has become inextricably entangled with behavior where the black underclass is concerned.
