Julia Becerra MIC 201 L Daniel Miller April 19 2018 Lab 2 Discussion: Simple Staining Simple staining uses a single basic dye to view the cells and shows the general morphology, shape and arrangement of cells being viewed. Staining to view cells is helpful because most microorganisms are colorless, it allows us to enhance the visual representation of microorganisms. In this lab we used two different microorganisms, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Using the dye, crystal violet, we were able to stain both microorganisms purple allowing students to view the microorganisms using oil immersion. To complete this experiment correctly, aseptic technique needed to be used. For this part of the lab, correct aseptic technique included working under a flame and using heat to dry to the microorganism. Simple staining is useful for future careers in laboratories and is also useful to identify the morphology of different microorganisms.
