Li 1 Angela Li Chan History 11 3-24-2018 American Indians and English Colonists I. American Indians American Indians did not have rigid gender roles unlike European colonists. Rather, these indigenous people were more pragmatic with their environment. Though there were different adult roles for men and women, both genders were taught how to cook, sew stitches, ride horses, use weapons, and follow tracks. This was done for the tribe to adapt and survive. Their common livelihood depends on their economy. Some Native Americans were more agricultural as they stay in one place to farm the land; others prefer to be semi-nomadic, moving from place to place and depends on foraging for their survival. When it comes to the treatment of their elders, Native Americans revere their ancestors and elders. Over 500 Native American nations have their own traditions toward the aging and the elderly. Elders are greatly respected for their wisdom and life experiences. Mainly, elders serve as the guide in their spiritual beliefs, which come in the form of animism or polytheism. Indians also use plants to enter higher mental or spiritual states. They perform special dances and rituals, which roughly create their religious practices. Native Americans regards the clarity dreams as a form of prophecies sent by the supernatural. The American Indians developed a belief that there is a supernatural force that is present everywhere, including one’s visions. Often they pray for
