Cognitive Development in Early Childhood Explain the method or methods professionals could use to determine whether a young child has reached appropriate cognitive milestones linked to cognitive theories in early childhood. For example, how could a young child demonstrate object permanence, conservation, or scaffolding? There are several methods professionals could use to determine whether a young child has reached appropriate cognitive milestones liked to cognitive theories in early childhood. One is through anecdotal notes taking while observing children during play in their natural environment while playing with other children in the same age group that is used in Early childhood classrooms. Lev Vygotsky zone on proximal development is one theory that is being used widely in preschool to naturally teach children in a sociocultural environment. Unlike Piaget’s belief of children inner thinking Vygotsky believed that thinking is not entirely within (text p. 109). Vygotsky believes that children learn through their environment by scaffolding. Children imitate what they see in their environment and tries on their own until they come to an understanding or reach zone of proximity. There are different teaching styles that teachers utilize in early childhood to enhance children’s cognitive development. Many use Piaget’s theory, Montessori, or combine different theories. One styles that is widely known is the project approach or Interactive Research Project
