Throughput in healthcare is an increasingly important topic because of increased patient demand and strained capacity. In the operating room this is especially important because patients who are having surgery expect to have a bed to recover in and as the money-makers historically for the rest of the hospital, if surgeries are decreased than the profits for the hospital are as well. At my organization, the perioperative department works very much like a closed-system. Our staff members do not work anywhere else in the department, including our environmental services workers and IT staff. We utilize the care partners in the department to transport patients from the inpatient units to the preoperative area.
