Kristen Wolbrink ARLT 101g 9/13/05 Journal 2 What is the relation between fear, the past, and the future? Horror films have many characteristics such as eerie music, darkness, fear, ghosts, etc. One of the characteristics often portrayed in horror films is fear pertaining to the past and the future. In relation to what we have been studying, the past has corresponded to fear in the Exorcist , through archaeology, and through past events in history. Fear is related to the future through the novel Frankenstein and the foreboding often scene in horror films. We first saw fear portrayed through the past in the opening of the Exorcist which contains a scene of archaeologists digging up the past. This opens up a fear of mystery and myths from stories told and past down to the future. Including the past artifacts opens a door in which the author can relate the story to things of the past that we already know about to create a sense of closeness and realness throughout.
