Kristen Wolbrink ARLT 101g 10/4/05 Journal 4 A Close Reading on the Masque of the Red Death I read the short story, The Masque of the Red Death , by Edgar Allan Poe. This story is about the “Red Death” that has fatally swept the country and about the Prince Prospero who has taken all of his friends into his home to entertain and “mask” what is going outside the walls of his home. The story begins by describing the Red Death of the pain it is causing and the “bleeding at the pores” that is occurring throughout the country. However, the story immediately moves into “deep seclusion” into the castled abbeys of Prince Prospero. The quickness of the change of scene within the first page shows that this seclusion is to shut out everything in the outside world and create a fantasy world. It talks of buffoons, ballet-dancers, musicians, Beauty, and wine. This shows that this is a world of laughter and is used to forget everything else. It is interesting how Beauty is capitalized as if it is referring to a person and is of Beauty vs. Red
