PROFESSIONAL ROLES AND VALUES TASK 1 Section A The nursing theory that has influenced my values and goals is the Philosophy and Science of Caring. Jean Watson’s theory seemed to explain how I see nursing as a profession. As a nurse, I try to demonstrate a caring behavior toward all my patients. One of the most rewarding things about being a nurse, is being there for a patient in some of their darkest times. Sometimes, just lending a caring touch can make a patient feel reassured. As humans, everyone wants to feel cared for and important. As a profession, we play a curial role in the success of our patients. By being effective care givers we can promote health and wellness in all aspects of a patient’s life. The role of a nurse is to be the patients advocate while promoting and renewing one’s health. I became a nurse because I enjoy caring for other people. It is rewarding to be there for individuals during their time in need. In many cases my patients needed a caring smile or hand to hold more than providing medications or other clinical aspects. Section B Florence nightingale and Mary Seacole were both historical figures that made a huge impact in the field of nursing. Florence nightingale worked long hard hours caring for wounded and sick soldiers. She contributed much of her time to researching better health practices particularly in sanitation. She became known as the pioneer for modern nursing and even started a training school. Mary Seacole also cared for sick soldiers however, she was denied working alongside Nightingale because she was Jamaican. They were both determined women who refused to let anything come in the way of helping people. After learning about historical figures that contributed to the profession I am now a part of, is inspiring. Knowing the conditions they worked in makes me grateful for how far nursing has come and is also exciting to know how far 2

PROFESSIONAL ROLES AND VALUES TASK 1 it can continue to grow. These women influence me to carry on the hard work of caring for individuals no matter the situation. I hope to someday contribute to the field of nursing just as they have. Section C The State Board of Nursing is a government agency that dictates nursing practice in each individual state. There main focus is protecting the public by ensuring nurses are practicing safely. They also oversee licensure and determine which individuals need to be disciplined for their actions. The board also regulates which educational programs will be accredited. The American Nurses Association is an organization that promotes and lobbies for nurse’s rights and looks out for their best interest. They promote safe workplaces for nurses and their general welfare along with the public. (Florida Board of Nursing Links and Resources) These two
