Facility and Unit: Merit Health Natchez; 4 th floor surg/ortho/peds Background and Challenges: Unit layout is a critical element in controlling how a change in a nurse’s assignment alters the in- transit time of the nursing staff shift. This is a 24-single room unit. It is designed to be spilt into two separate units (4 north and 4 south). Due to the shortage of nursing staff, the unit is running which increases the relative distances between one patient to the next. The unit is divided by one hallway with 12 rooms of each end. A nurse station, medication room, supply closet, and crash cart is on each end of the unit. Each room has a basic care cart stocked with various supplies. The ideal nurse- patient ratio is 5 patients per 1 nurse. Typically, the charge nurse is responsible for making the assignment and overseeing the unit but with such shortage on nursing staff, the charge nurse is now picking up patients. The nursing staff is required to be Associate’s prepared or higher, but because of shortage the unit has now took to use of LPNs. The nurses work three
