I chose the song “Look Down at the Earth” that is performed in the opera “Nixon in China”, by John Adams. This opera is written about Nixon’s journey to China to solve relations with them in order to help the war in Vietnam. Nixon went to China so that the U.S could use closer diplomatic relations with China as a leverage in dealing with the Soviets and use the Chinese to counterweight North Vietnam (-arrives-in-china-for-talks). The setting of the song, “Look Down at the Earth” is set in China in 1972. The song was originally performed in 1987, but the events that the opera are talking about occurred in 1972. To be specific, the characters in the opera were supposed to be representing Beijing Villagers. The intent of this song was to show an American woman trying tomake connections with the Chinese villagers. The performance changes the set from a market, to a farm, and to a classroom. The American relates her time in the U.S with the different sets that she is put in. For example, in the market, the Chinese villagers give her a glass elephant. The American women relates the elephant to the republican symbol, that does so well for our country. The American women is trying to show the Chinese people that the American
