2 1- Virtual teams are group of individuals operate across space, time and organizational boundaries and are connected through information technologies to accomplish organizational tasks. It has turned out to be common in most organizations. There are several reasons to explain the rapid growing of virtual teams. Advantages of Virtual Team Cost savings: First of all, it has lower overhead costs. Employers always want to reduce company expenses to gain more net profits. Obviously, if the company runs virtually, the employer doesn’t have to worry about leasing office space, buying office supplies, paying utilities etc. Leverage global talent : Second, virtual teams are “environmentally friendly”, because there will be no commute issue for the virtual team member, people can access their virtual team from anywhere in the world. Virtual Teams allows organizations to look for talent beyond their country of origin. This brings together the experts and specialists from across the globe to work together on the project. Increased knowledge sharing and greater innovation happens as organization’s human capital share their understanding of global and local markets as well as best business
3 practices. Furthermore, as virtual team members communicate online, there are no documents need to be printed, people can save their documents or company files in the “cloud”. In addition, virtual teams create new opportunities for people who cannot relocate due to family requirement. I have an aunt who lives in Minnesota and her company is in California. While she needs to take care of her mother, the company offers her to work virtually. Moreover, by creating a virtual team, company might have more satisfied employees and it will reduce employment turnover. On the other hand, there are some disadvantages needed to consider when creating a virtual team. Disadvantages of Virtual Teams Time differentiation: One problem with virtual teams is time zone differences, obviously it is a big challenge for global companies, because what would be normally be resolved in a three minutes conversation can be postponed up to 48 hours, unless a problem arises during the few hours their workdays overlap. Cost of Technology: The successful working of virtual team is supported by the efficient use of multiple communication technologies such as instant messaging, emails and video-conferencing, among others. No one tool can
4 provide the complete support. The cost associated with these installation and maintenance tools is little on the higher side. Conflicts, Lack of Trust & Collaboration: The cultural differences between the members of virtual teams gives rise to number of conflicts. For example, while an American would write a straightforward email describing a bad situation, this would be perceived as impolite by a South Asian (say Japanese) member of the team.
