Thomas Aquinas Synthesis of faith and reason – he thought they worked together Two ways of arriving to the same thing – reason can bring us to a conclusion any reasonable person can accept, but reason is not enough to understand the full nature of God. Existence of God can be proven through reason. But the ordinary person believes on the basis of faith. God Is made much more accessible through faith. Scientist and philosopher Did not like the ontological argument - Cosmological Argument Involves scientific reason not just definition alone. The 5 ways 1. Motion 2. Efficient Cause 3. Contingency 4. Gradation 5. Final Cause The first three are often known as cosmological argument Cosmological arguments can be deductive (necessary reasoning) no way we can reject, or inductive. Differ from ontological arguments because they involve scientific evidence. Cosmological arguments rely on the denial of an infinite regress. Infinite regress (there must be some first cause or something that terminates a process of going backwards infinitely to make what we’re discussing impossible) First Proof: Argument for Motion Traditional Argument from Aquinas Whatever is in motion is not moved by itself Requires another mover There cannot be an infinite regress of movers Therefore, an unmoved mover exists Does not require another mover but exists outside of movers Contemporary versions Motion replaced by explanation

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
