Review Questions
1.
Identify and discuss two different goals that the criminal justice system
has.
One of the goals for the criminal justice system is deterrence.
Deterrence is when someone sees consequences given to people that
commit crimes, people would be less likely to commit those crimes.
Another goal for the criminal justice system is incapacitation, which is
when they take certain criminals and put them in isolated areas so that
they cannot harm the public.
2.
What are two different types of deterrence? Describe each type.
One type of deterrence is general deterrence where the law gives
punishments to criminals so that people can see them and not want to
commit the crimes. Then, specific deterrence is when a particular
person is given punishment to try to stop that person from committing
the same crime.
3.
Why are victims considered the first “gatekeepers” of the criminal
justice system?
Victims are gatekeepers, because they see the original crime
committed and decided whether or not to report it.
