MOTHERS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING (MADD)MADD was created on September 5th, 1980, by Candace Lightner after her 13-year-old daughter, Cari, was killed by a drunk driver. The driver that killed Cari was convicted of drinking and driving 4 times before her death. Candace used her child’s death as an example to spread awareness about drinking and driving and the problems with the laws and policies associated with it. MADD is the nation’s largest nonprofit with a mission to protect families from drunk driving, drugged driving and underage drinking while supporting victims and survivors at no charge. MADD problemsThe problem that lead to the creation of the MADD organization were people whom drove drunk to include drugged drivers as well, to support the victims of this violent crime and prevent under-age drinking. MADD usually favors strict policies in a variety ofareas including an illegal blood alcohol content of .08% or lower and using stronger sanctions for DUI offenders, including mandatory jail sentences, treatment for alcoholism, and other alcohol abuse issues license suspension, maintaining the minimum legal drinking age at 21 years, Mandating alcohol breath-testing ignition interlock devices for everyone convicted of driving while legally impaired.
