Chapter 12: Politics, Society and the “Third World,” 1945-2000 “Third World” – The Developing countries of the world. This includes most of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Problems facing Africa – Lacking of education among Africans and trained personnel in this continent. The countries boundaries were drawn up by Europeans not the Africans, so these tribesmen were loyal to their tribes not their nations. OAU – Organization of African Unity in 1962 they pledged to respect the boundaries created by colonial powers. This organization did not help civil wars like in Biafra ANC – African National Congress – Black South Africans formed this, which allied with the small South African Communist Party to resist the white government. Nelson Mandela famous ANC leader Nyerere – Tanzania leader, he tried to develop non-ideological, democratic socialism that drew upon African communal tradition but this did little to lift the country out of poverty. Nasser – Came to power in Egypt in 1952 and died in office as president in 1970, there seemed as a large possibility of creating a large united Arab state. Nasser became a champion of anti-
