RUNNING HEAD: PROFESSIONAL ROLES AND VALUES 1 Task 1 Professional Roles and Values Erin E. Jones Western Governor’s University ID#686180
PROFESSIONAL ROLES AND VALUES 2 Abstract This is Task 1, Professional Nursing Practice, of Professional Roles and Values. There are eight different sections in this task, talking about nursing theory, the Board of Nursing, the ANA and other organizations. I will also be discussing specific roles in my professional practice as well as leadership traits that represent excellence in nursing. The paper will end with a discussion on how my work environment impacts certain areas, then acknowledgements.
PROFESSIONAL ROLES AND VALUES 3 Professional Roles and Values A. Identify a nursing theory that has influenced your values and goals. I chose Virginia Henderson’s “Need Theory” as the nursing theory that has most influenced me. Virginia is considered “the Nightingale of Modern Nursing.” She was an educator and an author who received her diploma in nursing in 1921 (Olin, 2011). She developed her Need Theory after much research and practice and believed that nurses need to do everything they can to help increase a patient’s independence to promote their healing even after a hospitalization. 1. Nurses apply her theory every day in helping people, both ill and well. We help people reach their maximum potential in independent living, the way they would if they had the strength and knowledge to do so on their own. Nurses apply her theory to implement excellent nursing practices by getting to know their patients personally to best understand what they need. 2. Virginia Henderson’s Need Theory fits my professional practice and I didn’t even know it until I started this research. I try to get to know my patients on a more personal level so I can adjust my care and practice to their needs. When I discharge patients, I take many things into consideration, i.e. their level of education, their age, how active they’ve been in their own care so far, how well they communicate, as well as other factors. I adjust my teaching according to their needs. I think it takes a flexible person to be able to adjust certain practices based on the specific needs of their patients.
PROFESSIONAL ROLES AND VALUES 4 B. Identify the contributions of two historical nursing figures in the nineteenth or twentieth century . 1. Clara Barton is well known for her role in the foundation of the American Red Cross. However, not as well known is her other efforts during the civil war period. She served at the front line and helped get supplies to troops on the battlefields and in hospitals. She is also credited for helping set up a group that looked for soldiers after the war (Jacob, 2000, p9). Unlike Clara Barton, Lillian Wald started around the WWI time and in better conditions. She is credited for many ‘firsts’ for nurses today. She was a leader in public health nursing, believing mostly in the prevention of illness and disease. She was also paramount in starting committees now known as the American Nurses Association and National League for Nursing (Jacob, p10).
