When a group of people have certain way of life, a culture, which has been set in place for many generations, it is a staple of their life and is very difficult to change. In order to change this, there must be a drastic change or an introduction of something new into the culture. This is precisely what happened to many Native American tribes and empires with the introduction of European settlers. Through the introduction of disease, technology, and trade, along with devastating the native population with violence, the Europeans were able to conquer the Natives and get them to abandon much of their culture in very little time. In the 15 th and 16 th centuries, European settlers arrived at the new world in the west and found there to be native people with a whole set of beliefs and social structure much different than that they had in Europe. One of the first settlers, Hernando Cortes, arrived in what is now Mexico in 1519. There he and his fellow settlers found a very strong Aztec empire already in place. They used superior fighting techniques along with very advanced weaponry to overtake a weaker native “army” of Aztec warriors.
