Anna Turner Turner H. English 1 Book Report #4 1-18-2016 A Tree Grows in Brooklyn 1) “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” written by Betty Smith. Published in 1943 by Harper and Brothers, Publishers. Consists of four hundred and ninety three pages. 2) This novel is about a girl named Francie Nolan growing up in the heart of Brooklyn, New York. Francie lives with hermother, Katie, her father, Johnny, and her younger brother Neely. The novel begins when Francie is about eleven years old and ends when she is in her late teens. It is written in third person omniscient, however it follows Francie’s thoughts a majority of the time. The book is a long recollection of how she grew up in Brooklyn being in a family with immigrants. Her grandparents on her father’s side came from Ireland and her mother’s side came from Austria. Francie’s family is very poor and the book concentrates on the struggles she had to endure growing up. Her father, Johnny was a good man, respectable, polite, and everyone liked him, however his biggest flaw was that he was a drunk. He could sing and play instruments and got some money off of that and waitering, but he kept his tips for alcohol and could never support his family the way he needed to. Katie, Francie’s mother, worked two or three jobs throughout the entire book, she cleaned houses or did factory work or anything to bring in a little extra money. Francie kept her head up through her difficult life by writing, she loved to read and she loved school. When she discovered what a talent she had for lying, one of her teachers told her to write the lies and tell the truth, from then on she wrote little stories about real events and how she thought they should have played out. As Francie got older, her family ran into a particularly rough time, her mother had a third child and Francie had to get a job to help out. She did simple factory work for a while, until she found a job reading and editing news papers. As the book continues, Francie is able to go to high

Anna Turner Turner H. English 1 Book Report #4 1-18-2016 school and has her first encounter with love and romance. She gets into a good college in Michigan and her beau gives her a promise ring. The book ends like it started, except Francie is six years older. She now views Brooklyn in a different way and reminisces on memories of her hometown. She goes around to particular places where she has many memories and says her good-byes, in preparation to leave for college, where she will start a completely new chapter of her life. 3) The title, “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” refers to the beginning and the end of the book. The beginning scene Francie is eleven years old, narrating her view of Brooklyn. She tells the reader about how she sees her city and what she thinks about it. She describes what she sees, the different people living their different lives. One of the things she describes is a tree growing in the yard outside her apartment building. She comments on the beauty of the tree and how something as simple as a tree can be taken for granted. At
