1 Global Climate Change Significant climatic change in the past/future Long-term influences Æ swings from ice-ages to warmer periods Can we do anything about it? Short-term influences Æ influencing global temperatures within the life span of present generations Attributed to human activities: anthropogenic forcing of the climate Can we do anything about it? Global Warming Present climatic condition The world is warming, climatic zones are shifting, glaciers are melting, sea level is rising The 2001 Intergovermental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 3 rd assessment report …there is a new and stronger evidence that most of the warming observed over the past 50 yrs is attributable to human activities…Both the temperature and sea level are projected to continue to rise throughout the 21 st century for all scenarios studied…There is conclusive evidence for a worldwide recession of mountain glaciers. Global Warming The warming trend Æ Human activities Æ Greenhouse effect Paleoclimatology (science studying past climates) Ice-core data, sediments, coral reefs, ancient pollen, tree-ring density etc.) Present time: the warmest in the last 600 yrs. The increase in temp. in the 20 th century: very likely the largest over the past 1000 yrs. The rate of warming in the last 30 yrs exceeds any comparable period in the entire measurable record (NASA) Global Warming Principal Radiatively Active Gasses
