1Martin Luther was born on November 10, 1483, to Margaret and Hans Luther in Eisleben, Germany. They had Martin baptized the very next day due to the belief that children born during that time would succumb to an early death. “Martin was nine years of age in 1492 when Christopher Columbus had discovered the New World.”1Martin Luther was a very educated manwho although knew poverty conditions his father worked hard to own numerous business to afford his son a higher education. Martin went to a Latin school in 1497 then earned his “Bachelor of Arts degree in 1502 when he was 22 years of age, then in 1505 he earned his master’s degree in law.”2“The University of Erfurt was one of the best German universities at this time and most likely the reason Luther’s father chose this university for his son.”3Although Hans Luther was hoping Martin would become a successful, wealthy lawyer to take care of himself and his wife Margaret in their old age, Martin had other ideas. Martin would become a monk after a lightning storm sent a bolt of lightning to hit the ground a few feet in front of him, this caused Martin to appeal to Saint Ann, the mother of Mary. 2Martin was a very accomplished man, he became a professor of theology, monk and later a priest, he was an author of “commentaries on scriptures, a hymnologist, and a preacher.”4He would marry Katharina Von Bora who was a nun that Martin himself helped escape from Cistercian Convent in April 1523.
