PSY621 Final Exam Review Chapter 9 The Four Stages of the Sexual Response Cycle Excitement and Plateau – from lecture Orgasm o For males, orgasms consist of a series of rhythmic contractions of the pelvic organs and 0.8 second intervals o Occur in 2 stages: Preliminary stage: the vas, seminal vesicles, and prostate contract forcing the ejaculate into a bulb at the base of the urethra Masters and Johnson call this sensation in stage 1 “ejaculatory inevitability” (cumming) which basically means once a sensation starts it can’t be stopped Second stage: the urethral bulb, muscles and the base of the penis and the urethra contract rhythmically, forcing the semen through the urethra and out the opening at the tip of the penis o In both males and females, there are increases in pulse rate, blood pressure and breathing rate during orgasm o For females, it’s again very similar A series of rhythmic muscular contractions of the orgasmic platform 0.8 second intervals
