SYG2430 Assignment – Defining Families September 7, 2016 Joetta Balda 1. When I look at the full list of rankings, there are a few surprises in the results that stand out to me. In reviewing the results I tried my best to keep an open mind. Question 9, “married couple and their frozen, fertilized embryos.” I was surprised to see a mean of 3.06. In my opinion, a married couple is definitely a family even though they don’t have living children yet. However, some may view a frozen fertilized embryo as a living child. This is crossing over into religious beliefs. When I think of children or infants, I imagine living and breathing humans that are seen with the naked eye and tangible. Therefore, this specific question does not constitute family to me, but the husband and wife do. The textbook definition of family states that “ . . .care for one another and any children . . .” which can be defined differently by eac individual (Benokraitis, 3). Question 25 surprised me as well “Unmarried, heterosexual couple living together.”
