Unformatted text preview: World War I: WOODROW WILSON Problems of Neutrality:- Freedom of the seas- seas are neutral so you should be able to sell your items o British declaration of the North Sea War zone and other restrictions- British say that you cant sell to everybody. British have the biggest navy US cant sell certain things to Germany so Germany has a blockade of their country o German use of submarines- Germans use submarines to block off Britian o Sinking of the Lusitania- Germany blows up the Lusitania ship which kills Americans. US protests- Say to Germany that they have to stop. The germans do in the end back down Bryans resignation Arabic pledge- Germany says that they will stop. o Houses futile mediation efforts o Sussex pledge- French vessel. American protest. Germany says they wont sink anymore ships with civilians. Moves toward War:- Debate over preparedness o Demands for stronger army and navy o Anti war advocates- people didnt want to go to war o National Defense Act of 1916- expands the army from 90,000- 170,000 o Move for a stronger navy- money was given to make navy better o Revenue for preparedness- you have to increase taxes to pay for it.- Election of 1916 o Wilson runs as a peace candidate because he had kept US out of war. Wilson carried the west o Charles Evans Hughes- republicans vote him in. A lot like Wilson only more Pro- War. o Progressive party ends o Democratic program o Results of the election- Wilson won End of Neutrality:- Wilsons effort to mediate o Wilsons terms of peace- opens treaties to stop fighting- German decision for unrestricted submarine warfare- goes back to sinking every ship - Break with Germany- Americans break away from Germany o Efforts to arm US merchant ships- o Zimmerman telegram- British release a telegram from Germany to Mexico. It said that Mexico should come and intervene the US. Then Mexico can get back Texas and other states.- Russian revolution- Germany is able to send more troops to the Western front.- American Declaration of War o WHY: Germans are attacking US ships US is already involved with the allies. We already loaned money to them British Propaganda. British are portraying the Germans to be SUPER bad US enters the War:- Early US Role o Limited expectations- didnt expect too much from the US o William S Sims contributions to naval strategy o Financial assistance- 3 billion dollars is loaned to the allied countries o First contingents- send over 14 thousand men- Conscription- (draft) o Selective Service Act- Everyone has to register for the draft ages 21-30. o Amalgamation vs. Independence- British want to put American troops in British troops. Want this because it will give the Americans better experience....
