Chapter 3 - Managing Stress: Coping With Life’s Challenges 1/29/07-1/31/07 What is stress? Stress : mental and physical response of our bodies to the changes in our lives Stressor : physical, social, or psychological event or condition that causes the body to adjust to a specific situation Adjustment : the attempt to cope with a given situation Strain : the wear and tear the body and mind sustain in adjusting to or resisting a stressor Eustress : positive stress that presents opportunities for personal growth Distress : negative stress that can have a detrimental effect on health The Body’s Response to Stress Fight-or-flight : physiological reaction in which the body prepare to fight danger or escape from it -surprised by sudden stressor -adrenal glands jump into action secrete adrenaline -increased heart rate, blood pressure, and blood flow to muscles -sudden physiological changes allow for quick response to stressor The General Adaptation Syndrome Homeostasis : a balanced physical state in which all the body’s systems function smoothly Adaptive response : form of adjustment in which the body attempts to restore homeostasis General adaptation syndrome (GAS ): the pattern followed in the physiological response to stress, consisting of the alarm, resistance, and exhaustion phases 1. alarm 2. resistance 3. exhaustion hypothalamus : a section of the brain that controls the sympathetic nervous system and directs the stress response epinephrine
