Chapter 3- Lifestyle Choices and Hypokinetic Conditions Hypokinetic Conditions (hypo= low, kinetic= energy/movement) Conditions that result from too little activity Increasing weekly caloric intake improves health Breast cancer and colon cancer associated with the hypokinetic lifestyle Examples: -CVD -arteriosclerosis Arteriosclerosis : the thickening and hardening of arteries Atherosclerosis : the long-term build up of fatty deposits and other substances such as cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium, and fibrin (clotting material in the blood) on the interior walls of the arteries -peripheral vascular disease : disease of the peripheral vessels Restriction in blood flow usually caused by arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis in the vessels of the extremities Common signs- leg pain, numbness, tingling, coldness, cramping, and loss of hair on the effected limbs -hypertension : high blood pressure, “silent killer”, anything consistently over 139/89mmHg
