2 TASK 1 PROFESSIONAL NURSING PRACTICE Professional Nursing Practice A. A nursing theory that has influenced my values and goals. The nursing theory I chose to focus on is Watson’s Theory of Human Caring. “According to Watson, the nursing process is a person-to-person process of care giving and nursing is centered on helping the patient achieve a higher degree of harmony in the mind, body and soul” (Tektas & Cam, 2017, p. 443). A study was done using Watson’s theory on the mental health of pregnant women after a pregnancy loss, it was determined to have a positive effect (Tektas & Cam, 2017). I have worked in Labor and Delivery for almost 28 years, so this theory has played an important part in my career. I am sad to report I have taken care of too many pregnant patients who have experienced a loss. When I introduce myself to these patients I tell them in a soft, calming voice I am so sorry for their loss and explain there is nothing I can say that will make their pain and sadness go away, but I want them to know I am here for them and we will get through this day. My goal is for my patient and her family to not feel like they are in this alone. Providing patient care that focuses on the whole being is a service I value. Ultimately, my goal is not only to help them through this specific day but also to provide them memories they will cherish when they relive that experience in their heart and mind. 1. An explanation of how nurses apply this theory to excellent nursing practices. Watson’s Theory of Caring is one of the simplest of theories for nurses to utilize in their nursing practice. Watson thought nursing interventions and practices had a mechanical meaning, so she defined them as healing factors (Tektas & Cam, 2017). Her theory embellishes a holistic approach. Nurses all have different personalities and approaches to patient care. The application of this theory is through approaching oneself and the patient with love and compassion, enabling faith and hope, sensitivity, and developing a trust-giving relationship (Tektas & Cam, 2017).

3 TASK 1 PROFESSIONAL NURSING PRACTICE 2. Discuss how this theory fits my professional practice. This theory is perfect for my professional practice. Being a Labor and Delivery nurse is an honor. My goal is for every one of my patients to have a beautiful experience and write their own birth story. Yes, in the situation of a loss it is devastating for the patient, but I also go home with a sadness in my heart. I have to believe I gave it all I could to help her physically as a patient care provider but also emotionally. This theory goes beyond just dealing with patients who experience a loss but focuses on a holistic approach. When I have the honor of being a part of someone’s birth I utilize this theory in providing my patients a comfortable environment like Watson refers to, as well as, teaching in a way of understanding for my patient (Tektas & Cam, 2017).
