The Flag is Bleeding, Faith Ringgold, 1967, oil on canvas painting
The first piece I chose for my online gallery is by Faith Ringgold,
Flag is Bleeding
. I selected this work because it is interesting how the figures
arms are intertwined, yet them seem trapped behind the American flag.
find it ironic that this piece was created in 1967, over 50 years ago and we
are experiencing the same type of feeling.
In today’s society, we need more
artists to represent how everyone’s feeling and not hiding behind social
This work spoke to me because, 50 years later for a country who
should have moved forward with stereotypes and racism is experiencing the
same feelings people felt 50 years ago.
If this was made today, I don’t think
there would be an interlocking of arms; but more blood shed and tears.
George Washington Carver Crossing the Delaware: Page from American
History, Robert Colescott, 1975, acrylic on canvas
The second piece of work that I chose for my gallery is
Washington Carver Crossing the Delaware: Page from American History,
I was drawn to the bold colors and facial expressions of this piece.
think this is an important moment in history, especially in Black history.
