David McEwen 1 S0091331 ENTA11007 - Engineering Materials Assignment 1 An alloy is a combination of two of more elements, at least one of which must be a metal. The resulting alloy must have metallic properties. They are generally designed to enhance the properties of the resulting element to serve a particular purpose. Eg. To make the product stronger or more durable. (a) Design an aluminium alloy that has a density of 2.6450g/cm 3 I have chosen to use Magnesium which has a density of 1.738g/cm 3 to lower the overall density of the aluminum alloy. The Aluminium-Magnesium alloy is expected to have a final density of 2.6450 g/cm 3 69955 . 2 738 . 1 6450 . 2 6450 . 2 69955 . 2 738 . 1 x y y x - = = + Now substitute this value of y into the original equation:- 51899784 . 1 094188995 . 1 665207072 . 1 665207072 . 1 094188995 . 1 6450 . 2 6438110055 . 0 9797929284 . 738 . 1 6450 . 2 3 7.28757020 4.6918179x - 7.14030975 738 . 1 6450 . 2 69955 . 2 738 . 1 6450 . 2 69955 . 2 738 . 1 = = = = - + = + = -
