Amanda Pendley Professor Jessica Killeen Sociology 122 24 February 2018 Understanding Poverty Poverty is influenced by many things such as socio-economic class, age, gender, and race. However, just because we understand the factors that go into defining poverty, that doesn’t mean that we fully understand the mindset of those who live within it. Each demographic experiences the world through a slightly different perspective; one that they have most likely been conditioned to follow since a very young age. So, when asked to “step into someone else’s shoes” if you would, we can never fully understand another person’s way of thinking since we already have our own, but we can take a deeper look into the systems, conditions, and histories that attribute to a person or family’s life in poverty. Watching the film that included “Tammy’s Story” as a key part of its case study addressing poverty, I learned that there are a lot of different perspectives on the issue coming from the same household. The elder son named Matt and Tammy, the mother, had contrasting views when it came to how large of a part personal choices played in poverty. Throughout the whole video, the son is criticizing his mother on what she wears, her choice of work, and how clean she keeps the house. At one point, he claims that they have a literal pile of junk outside of their house that his mother never gets around to dealing with. Matt is obviously well aware of the conditions his family lives in and is also quite embarrassed by it. His attempts to fit in with the middle class show that his perceptions are influenced by the norms of society. To him, his life may not be normal compared to those of his middle-class friends. Since he has been exposed to

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
