The hidden curriculum consists of non-academic socialization and training within the school system, otherwise known as the things we are being subconsciously taught. The first thing I thought about when we were talking about this in class was a slam poem called “Somewhere in America.” This is one of the more well known slam poems that has circulated the internet over the past couple of years; it focuses on pointing out flaws in the American public education system, as well as how those flaws go on to shape other aspects of teenager’s lives. It handles some pretty serious topics very well such as how schools prohibit certain books, the value that is placed on good grades instead of mental health, and the injustice of schools refusing to deal with or make better issues such as rape and bullying. The ending line is “Somewhere in America, the greatest lessons are the ones you don’t remember learning,” and I think that sums up the whole concept of the hidden curriculum perfectly.
