ICT374 Lab 1: Introduction to the Lab Environment Learning Objectives: 1. Understand how the operating systems in the lab machines are set up and deployed, including roles of the image server and the two SSDs on each local machine. 2. Learn to deploy the required and start the OS. 3. Learn to update the OS images on the local machine. 4. Learn to use Linux terminal 5. Understand the file hierarchy and the concepts of current directory and home directory and associated commands such as cd , pwd 6. Learn to use basic Unix commands for file handling: cp , mv , mkdir and rm 7. Learn to use the command man to view the manual pages of Unix commands. 8. For internal students to become familiar with the lab setup 9. For external students to become familiar with use of Linux server ceto Required Reading: LINUX: Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition (or just Rute for short): Chapter 4: Basic Commands. Access to Software: Internal students will use the lab machines on Murdoch Campus (ECL2.039 and ECL2.044). You must also bring a USB drive with you to the lab to for copying your work from the lab machine. This is necessary as you cannot retain your work on the lab machine. For external students, if you have already installed Linux, then use your own Linux installation. If you have not yet installed your own Linux, you may use our Linux server (ceto.murdoch.edu.au) temporarily until you have installed the Linux on your machine.
