Are you a mind with a body, or a body with a mind? Or do you not have a mind and are just controlled by your physical body and brain? How do you know? The mind-body problem is the search for how the mind and body truly interact. The mind is our non-physical aspect of ourselves. It is our soul, our spirit, and our thoughts. The body means our physical body, our brain, and what our brain does. There are two main sides to this controversy: Dualism and Physicalism. Dualism is the theory that the mind and body exist as separate entities; they are not of the same substance. Physicalism addresses the idea that everything that exists is essentially only physical, and that there is nothing non-physical about our lives. Dualism has different branches of ideas stemming from its basic belief that the mind and body are different entities, physical and non-physical. There is Property Dualism in which our only substance is physical, but from that stems mental and physical properties. Substance Dualism is the idea that the mind and body are separate and interact with each other casually. Descartes’ theory of Substance Dualism is heavily supported by numerous arguments and ideas. His foundation for this belief was: The body has property A, and the mind has property B, if two things do not have exactly the same properties, then they cannot be identical; therefore, the mind and body are not identical. They are separate. This is what established Substance Dualism as different than Physicalism and Property Dualism. Descartes argued that material substances do not have the ability to be conscious. But, human beings are conscious, so there must be something more to us than just physical features.
