2 Diversity project Walden University Diversity Proficiencies are characteristics and attitudes that reflect the beliefs of educators. Having an understanding of the Diversity Proficiencies allows teachers to reflect upon their performance as a highly qualified teacher. Educators must demonstrate Awareness of self, understanding of the learner, the ability to create a learning environment that is conducive to the needs of the students, the ability to plan, instruct and assess and the ability to work collaboratively with others to promote positive social change. According to the diversity proficiencies survey, my strengths include having an awareness of self, understanding the learner and creating a learning environment that supports the diverse needs of the learners. The areas in which I am working to improve includes planning, instruction and assessment, and professional practice. My strengths and the improvement of these areas will allow me to meet the needs of the English language learners (ELL) at my school. The U.S. Census reports for the year 2017 indicated that the local schools serve 56% of Caucasian families 39.7% of African American families 0.1% of American Indian and Alaskan families, 2.6 % of Asian families, 0.15 of Hawaiian or Pacific Islander families (United States Census Bureau). The report also shows that 6.8% of the population speak other languages than English in the home. I believe that ELL students are the most underserved students in our school district. This data also serves as evidence that there is a critical need for educators to modify planning, instruction, and assessments to meet the needs of these learners. ELLs benefit when their teacher utilizes a range of English as a Second Language (ESL) instructional strategies. (Irby, Lara-Alecio, Tong, Guerrero, Sutton, Adbelrahman, 2018) In addition, I believe that to improve planning , instruction and assessment I must begin using performance data and more
3 frequently attend professional developments related to instructional strategies that improve ELLs academic performance. I personally believe that all students are capable of learning and that all students uniquely contribute to the learning process. It is important that I foster, design and implement culturally responsive teaching practices to meet the diverse needs of all students including my ELLs. “Teaching in ways responsive to the cultures of students is vital to enhance equity of access to achievement and putting education policy into practice” (Robin, Anderson, and Drake , 2015) As a result of research done for students who are underserved because of cultural differences in New Zealand, officials created educational policies that foster learning for these students. The policies include, participating with learners and communities in robust dialogue for the benefit of learner’s achievement, actively engaging in respectful working relationships with learners,
