1. Explain why the directors felt the settings were so important in their film BARTHOLOMEW'S SONG. Why all of the strong horizontal lines in the composition? a. The settings were as important as the characters. When showing the stark whiteness of all the walls, interior and exterior, it showed a world of no color, of no deviations, of no personal thoughts, a world of compliance. The strong horizontal lines give direction to the characters, show the undeviating path they all take every day. 2. Why did the director the film THE HILL use visual artifices like animation and dolls? Is it successful? a. To emphasize what Jack and Jill were saying in the what if/imagined. It would have been difficult to pull from reality and show what would have happened if Jill had turned and left, in a visual manner, not leaving anything to our imaginations. Or when Jill said she felt broken, the director wanted a physical representation of her words. I didn’t particularly like the animation and dolls, it seemed out of place.
