I would respond to my friend by first confirming his statement that the bible actually is a collection of stories writtenby many different authors for the expressed purpose of delivering God’s word to His people. However, oversimplifying the purpose of God’s word by saying that it gives you something to do so that you feel better aboutyour place in this crazy world detracts from the importance of the messages it contains. Not only that, but it divertsthe focus of the Bible from God to the individual. The Bible is not about you and me, it is a collection of bookswritten to glorify God and grace He has shown to His creation that betrayed Him from the start. The most importanttheme in the Bible is the redemption of man from his sin nature. And, while it is true that we can garner somepractically applicable life lessons from the bible, this view is incomplete and misses the bigger picture scripturepaints (Cartwright, Gutierrez, & Hulshof 2016). Rather than view the Bible in this simplistic way, I would explainthe intricacies and depth of the messages it contains. Contrary to what many think, the Bible is not a collection ofstories about man’s interaction with God, but it is a collection of stories detailing God’s plan for His creation.Although written by human hands, the Bible is authored by God through inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The pointthat the Bible is a collection of stories to help one feel better is a gross misrepresentation. That is not to say thatthere are no scriptures that are meant to comfort believers during difficult seasons, but there are many instanceswhere God rebukes and punishes the people of this world for their disobedience, disbelief, or unfaithfulness. Aprime example of this is found in Numbers where upon arriving to the promised land the Israelites become afraidand lose faith in God because the path before the looks difficult, so they turn away from the promised land. Becauseof this, God sent His judgement to them and they are cursed to wander the desert for an entire generation until thefaithless ones were all dead and gone (Numbers 14:11-38). Finally, I would say to him that the true purpose of theBible is to reveal God through the scriptures written in common language that is easy to understand and practicallyapplicable to the common man (Hindson, & Towns, 2015).
