American Puritanism Henry VIII was king of England in the 1530’s. Lots of English people wanted Henry VIII to make a new church whose beliefs aligned with the earlier church. The Puritans are called Puritans because they think that Henry VIII did not purify the Roman church. Puritan Beliefs Puritans believe that humans are unworthy in the eyes of God because of Adam and Eve’s original sin. Puritans believe in the elect, a set group of people who God chose to go to heaven. Puritans believe that God is all knowing. Puritan Contributions Education and literacy were very important to the puritan people. Puritans did not want one person to have too much power so they divided power among themselves. In the eyes of a Puritan, a daily diary was held the value of one’s life. 2) Puritan belief of predestination – What is predestination? What role did this play in Puritan society? (Remember what you read in the above section.) Predestination is essentially the belief that God has determined beforehand who goes to heaven and who goes to hell; In other words who he chooses to be saved. In puritan society, the people who are the elect or are being saved are higher up in society than the reprobate. 3) Puritan Education – i. Why did the Puritans feel education was important? The Puritans felt education was important because without education, they would not be able to receive salvation. In order to receive salvation it is crucial they can read the bible and they cannot do so without being educated.
