Growing up my mother instilled in me the values that she grew up with and taught me to honor my roots and live them. The way I preserve my heritage is by the food I eat every day and the actions I take. Everyday my mom makes a homemade meal for my entire family to eat together. I wait everyday afterschool for my dad to come home from work so we can all eat dinner together as a family. The concept of eating together as a family is rarely seen in American culture but my family and I make the effort to eat together every day. My religion is another way I honor my heritage because it represents the part of my roots that people can’t see physically in my appearance but through my actions. The religious aspect of my life has affected the values I have and attitude I carry every day. It is because of because of my religion that I do not drink or smoke and will not do along those lines in the future. I am not ashamed of my family and where I came from but rather proud of who I am and how my parents have come so far. My parents have made me proud of who I am and where I am from. I empathize more with Dee’s character because I like to honor my heritage through knowledge of the past rather than actually living it. However, I am not ashamed of my heritage like Dee was. I also relate to Maggie as well on the bases that I like to do things that my parents and grandparents once did it Mexico but not as a lifestyle. I like to experience how life was back then for a while but I would not like to live like that regularly. I am accustomed to my more modern day of living that I have grown out of the more traditional way my ancestors once lived. I do accept all aspects of my heritage but time has definitely obscured my history. As I get older I have started to realize that my family and I are getting more modernized than every before. We are using technology that was never around for our ancestors to use. The everyday use of technology has definitely distance me from my roots and made it harder to live traditionally. However, it has opened the door to learn and educate myself of my past with ease. The ability to be able to look up anything about my history and get an answer in seconds has changed our society as a whole to be more like Dee. That is why my heritage although not lived out everyday like my ancestors once did is still honored by my knowledge and understanding of the past. ...
