CUSTOMS OF THE TAGALOGS(Las costumbres de losindios Tagalos de Filipinas)JUAN DE PLASCENCIAI.Author’s BackgroundII.III.Juan de PlasenciaIV.Born in the 16thcentury to theillustrious family of the PortocarrerosinPlasencia,intheRegionofExtremadura, Spain.His real name isJoan de PuertoCarrero, del convento de Villanueva dela Serena.He was a Spanish Friar of theFranciscan order.He spent most of his missionary life inthe Philippines, where he foundednumerous towns in Luzon and authoredseveral religious and linguistic books,most notably, the Catecismo de laDoctrina Cristiana, 1581 – translatedthe Christian Doctrines in Tagalog, thefirst book ever printed in thePhilippines.Juan de Plasencia was born in the early16th century as JuanPortocarreroinPlasencia,intheregionofExtremadura, Spain. He was one of theseven children of PedroPortocarrero, acaptain of a Spanish schooner.Said to have been inspired to be aFranciscan because of his upbringingspent during a spiritual and religiousresurgence affected by Spain’s Siglode Oro, a Golden Age when arts andliterature flourished in many parts ofSpain, among them his nativeExtremadura.Well reputed as the one who took theleading role in fostering the spread ofprimary education.Converted natives, taught catechisms,and organized towns and barangaysinthe Philippines.Promoted the understanding of boththe Spanish language among thenatives, and the local languagesamong the missionaries, to facilitatethe task of spreading Christianity.Initiated the ReduccionPolicy – policyto reduce or resettle natives in centrallocations.Some of his works aimed to put an endto some injustices being committedagainst the natives by certaingovernment officials.V.VI.Arrival in the PhilippinesVII.Came with the first batch of Franciscanmissionaries in the Philippines in 1577.
