Creating the Cotton South – 40Categories: ID, ENV, PEOHow would you explain the large and expanding domestic trade in slaves between 1800 and1860? What combination of factors produced this result?1) The large and expanding domestic trade in slaves between 1800 and 1860 can be explained as the result of the Industrial Revolution. During this time, the Northern industrial states were producing mass amounts of textiles, and therefore required large amounts of cotton from the Southern slave states. As the demand for cotton increased, so did the demand, and price, for African Americans. With the restriction on slave imports, the Southerners began searching for new sources of African Americans. The answer was found in the Chesapeake region where “nearly half of the nation’s black population” resided, and with each decade, increased by 27% each decade. It was with this surplus of slaves that Chesapeake slave owners began selling their slave to the cotton planters of the South.
