Running head: NIKE BECOMES A TECHNOLOGY COMPANY 3 Summary “Nike Becomes a Technology Company” case study shows the company’s understanding and adaptability in its marketspace. Nike, named for the Greek goddess of Victory started in 1964 by Bill Bowman and Philip H, Knight. [Ref18]. Philip H. Knight ran track and field for University of Oregon, this is where the idea of starting “Blue Ribbon Sport”, which later becomes “Nike”. The company started with $1000 capital, $500 from Philip H. Knight and $500 from Bill Bowerman, Philip’s college track coach from Oregon. [Emm15]. Philip Knight and Bill Bowerman understands the importance running shoes and how it impacts the sport, with this understanding, Bill Bowerman came up with the “idea of rubber and latex running shoe outsole, with raised nubs for traction” [Nik14]. He began testing and applying this theory, by pouring rubber into his wife’s Barbara Bowerman’s waffle iron to develop the sole of the shoe, this theory became his first patent in 1974. [Nik14]. From early days, Philip Knight and Bill Bowerman has used technology to make their idea come into life. Fast forward few years later, with collaboration with NASA, Nike Air was born. Nike Air started as a combination of NASA process of “blow rubber molding used in producing helmet was applied to create hollow athletic shoe soles designed to be filled with shock-absorbing materials” [Cha04], combined with Nike’s technology “Nike Air technology consists of pressurized air inside a tough, yet flexible bag. The Air Sole units are located in the midsole beneath the heel, forefoot or in both areas”. [Nik18].

Running head: NIKE BECOMES A TECHNOLOGY COMPANY 4 The use of technology continues throughout the history of Nike. In February 2012, Nike released Nike+ Fuel Band. Nike+ Fuel Band is a device worn on the wrist, just like a watch, and the purpose is to track activity of the individual wearing the device. The device tracks physical activity such as; walking or running and calculate to determine the number of calories burned. The wristband is integrated into the Nike+ online community and phone application. Using Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology, the FuelBand stays connected and syncs the data it collects with the user’s Nike+ account. The competition in this market include Fitbit and Jawbone. Nike continues to adjust the FuelBand product by adding the NikeFuel. Nike’s proprietary software turns all tracked movement into NikeFuel points.
