Chapter 10 03/20/08 Basic Motives: Survival- hunger, thirst Social- sex, maternal Reinforcing Brain Stimulation Olds 1954- self stimulation: rats press lever for an electrical stimulation to the brain. Medial Forebrain Bundle stimulation. (MFB is the area in the brain that was stimulated). Mesolimbic dopamine pathway: VTA nucleus accumbens. (releases dopamine in that area) Homeostasis- maintain internal environment at optimal level (regulate temp) Hunger: Variables- glucose (blood sugar) * o There are sensors in the hypothalamus for glucose Fats Amino acids Satiety detectors: stop you from eating (when you’re full). o Digestive system satiety detectors- 1. Stomach 2. Duodenum- in small intestine CCK (cholecystokinin) 3. Liver sensors (glucose)l Obesity and Anorexia o 25% of Americans o More common in women o Views: genetic/ overeating
