The main character in John Updike short story “A&P” which was published in 1961 is a 19-year-old boyname is Sammy. The setting of the story takes place at A&P grocery store. Sammy, a cashier working atA&P grocery store is also the narrator of the story. So, the story is told in the first-person point of viewand in the present tense. This gives the readers an exclusive insight into the main character feelings andchoices as well as the reasons behind his choices. Each character also plays an important part in thestory development whether major or minor. This story gets the readers thinking all about the rules andcustoms regarding fashion, and the greater liberty to express oneself. In the short story “A&P”, JohnUpdike uses his character, Sammy, quitting his job to show the effects that a single action can have. The story begins with Sammy, an opinionated, skeptical and cynical teenager working at A&P on anotherlazy summer afternoon. Sammy thinks the people in his hometown or at least the people who come intothe A&P are "sheep," or followers, even "scared pigs in a chute" (29). (Updike,1961). Sammy complainedin his mind about the conformity, and dullness of his community. As he narrates the story and checkinggroceries he grasps that three barefoot girls wearing nothing, but their swimsuits have walked into thestore. To Sammy the three girls show him a simple way of mocking this conformity by wearing nothingbut their swimsuits into the store, they are stirring things in the community which is what Sammy hasbeen yearning for.
