Automation in Cars and Safety: Research Methodology & Analysis Report Study Design: Automotive safety has been a major concern since the invention of the “horseless carriage” a century ago. Recently, advancements have been made that allow drivers to surrender control of their vehicles to a computer which will drive the car for them. While this technological advancement is in its primitive stages, there is some concern to its contribution to the negligence of the driver. Are drivers taking their concentration away from the road too frequently because of the many bells and whistles that modern cars possess? In the interest of determining the actual safety contribution that automation features that cars now have; this study will consist of only automation features that exist in production cars today (not features that are illegal or banned due to insufficient testing or development). It is important to define the separate levels of automation that can exist in cars. There are 5 levels of automation: Level 0: No cruise control or features that allow the driver to surrender control of the car, throttle, or other aspects of movement. Level 1: You still make all the driving decisions, but you get a little assistance from now-basic features like cruise control. Level 2: You keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road at all times, but the car can make some assistive changes for you, like adaptive cruise control, which can adjust speed based on the road conditions it senses. Level 3: This level encompasses the “auto pilot” modes like you’ll find in the new Tesla model. The car can make most of the driving decisions under certain circumstances, but it sometimes needs a human driver to take over and make a call.
