Dear Professor and Class, In the documentary A Class Divided, teacher Jane Elliott devised a clever strategy to educate a class of third graders about prejudice and discrimination in the wake of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She separated her class based on theireye color and told the children that those with blue eyes were better than those with brown eyes. The brown eyed children were forced to wear blue collars and were given fewer privileges than their blue eyed counterparts. Within the span of a day, the children's behavior drastically changed. You could witness the tension play out when the children playing at recess and in frustration one brown eyed child hit a blue eyed child. The following day Elliott switched the experiment to instead give preference to children with brown eyes.
