Terri Schiavo CaseVivian BisphamKeiser University
This case is for sure a very heated case I wanted to start off giving a better explanation of both sides and then giving my opinion on whom I felt was right or wrong in this situation and why.Terri Schindler was only 41 when she died from having her feeding tube removed due to her being in a vegetate state, she had been in this condition since she was 26 years old from having an eating disorder which caused her to collapse in her home one day. Throughout the years her husband, mom & dad had been going through a long twelve-year fight in court against one another to decide whether her feeding tube should be taken out or if it should remain in. Twelve years is a long time to have a trial but, in this case, I feel like it was needed because you had two people (her husband & her parents/family) who seem to be fighting for this woman but just had different beliefs. Here we discuss the assumptions that the husband Michael was trying to have her feeding tube taken out for his own reasonings vs the wellbeing of Terri, a big reason as to why seemed to be for the money. According to this article in “February of 1990 at the age of 26, Terri Schiavo collapsed at home and oxygen was cut off to her brain for several minutes. The cause of the collapse is disputed. Michael Schiavo, Terri’s husband, blames a cardiac arrest induced by a potassium imbalance associated with bulimia”. It seems no one was even aware of Terri having any eating disorders but her husband, which then had people including her parents believe he may have choked her and that is what caused her oxygen to get cut off, there is even claims that she had neck injuries when reported to the hospital. There seems to also have been verbal abuse for instance her husband threatening to leave her if she got as big as she was in high school, this also I am sure was a big reason for her eating disorder if it was true she had one. Terri husband Michael seemed to have been very unsure in this case and back in forth about allotto where Terri father even states Which Michael are we to believe?”. “The one who promised he would take care of his wife for the rest of his life, or the one who says these were Terri’s death wishes?” When Terri first became in a vegetate stage Michael wanted her to remain alive and was doing what was necessary to keep her alive. Once money became involved he began to change how he felt and say she would not want to live that way. Based on what her parents and friend said she would never say such a thing and would want to live. Now here we discuss Michael claims of doing what best for terry and the assumption that Terri parents where pretty much doing what was best for them and not Terri by keeping her alive.
