Running Head: Tutu 2 Born in 1931 in South Africa, Archbishop Desmond Tutu was a prominent spiritual leader of black South Africans in their fight against the oppressive apartheid system. In 1978 Tutu was selected as the first black general secretary of the south African council of churches. He utilized his elevated position in south Africa religious hierarchy to advocate for the end of apartheid. The government outlawed or banned all forms of protest in the country. The government also jailed or killed most of the real leaders of the resistance against the apartheid system. Bishop Tutu took the position to utilize non- violence as way to break down the apartheid system. He learned this method from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. civil rights movement of the 1950 & 60’s. Bishop Tutu was not born a leader. He insisted he was neither a politician nor a leader of the apartheid resistance movement in south Africa. He never even looked at himself like the
