1. Most prokaryotes are microscopic but what they lack in size they more than make up for in numbers 2. The number of prokaryotes in a single handful of fertile soil is greater than the number of people who have ever lived 3. Prokaryotes thrive almost everywhere, including places too acidic, to salty, to cold, or too hot for most other organisms 4. Biologists are discovering that these organisms have an astonishing genetic diversity Section 27.1 1. Most prokaryotes are unicellular although some species form colonies 2. Prokaryotic cells have a variety of shapes, the most common of which are: 1. Spheres(cocci) 2. Rods(bacilli) 3. Spirals 3. Cell-Surface Structures 1. One of the most important features of nearly all prokaryotic cells is their cell wall, which maintains cell shape, provides physical protection, and prevents the cell from bursting in a hypotonic environment 2. Using a technique called the Gram stain 1. Scientists can classify many bacterial species into two groups based on cell wall composition, Gram-positive and Gram-negative, based on the amount of peptidoglycan 2. Gram-negative are generally more threatening than Gram-positive bacteria among pathogenic strains 3. Effectiveness of certain antibiotic drugs due to their inhibition of peptidoglycan
