1 1. Executive Summary Three test experiments determined the properties of wood. The first experiment performed a compression test of wood perpendicular to the grain and calculated the proportional limited, the yield strength at 0.1% offset and the modulus of elasticity. The second experiment performed a compression test of wood paralleled to the grain and calculated the proportional limit, yield strength at 0.1% offset, the ultimate strength, the modulus of elasticity, and the modulus of resilience. The third experiment performed a flexure test of wood and calculated the proportional limit, the maximum shearing stress, the modulus of rupture and the modulus of elasticity. Graphs of the stress strain curve for each wood in compression paralleled to the grain was plotted. The characteristics of each specimen, proportional limit of raw load vs. strain data was compared and described. 2. Procedure Begun the experiment with three wooden specimens. Each specimen was examined and determined the type of wood, the number of rings per inch. and the percent of summer wood. The cross-sectional dimensions also measured. The first experiment was a compression test perpendicular to the grain of the specimen. Firstly, a 6-inch specimen placed on testing machine used with a base plate to raise the loading head high enough when the strainometer placed under the loading head. The
